  1. They will fill the area that was opened to access the canals with silver, composite, or other build up materials...basically a filling will be placed. Then they will reduce all surfaces of the tooth to make room for the porcelain, gold, or both (porcelain fused to gold or metal) crown. They will then take an impression to send to the lab to make your crown (unless they have a Cerec milling unit that can create the crown in office while you wait.) If they send the impression to the lab then they will place a temporary crown on the tooth until it can be cemented into place...takes about an hour. If they have a Cerec it takes a little longer but you will have your permanent crown when you leave, if not, you will have to return in two weeks to have your permanent crown seated which is just the process of removing the temporary, trying the crown in, adjusting it to bite correctly, and then cementing it into place...quick and easy.

    Hope this helped.

  2. If you're wearing a temporary, they will simply remove it, re-prep the tooth (basically cleaning it off) and replace it with the permanent crown.

If not, they will take upper and lower impressions for the creation of your permanent crown, as well as prep your tooth for the crown which involves burring it down a bit (this will probably be the most unpleasant part). They will install a temporary crown until the lab has had time to create your permanent prosthetic at which point you'll go in again to have the temp removed and the permanent installed.

Depending on how quickly your dental practitioner works and how busy s/he is that day, either one of these procedures should take no longer than an hour, provided no complications are encountered.

I would imagine if you googled "root canal/dental crown" you'd gat a much more comprehensive description of the process than I provided here.
