I had a thyroid problem when I was younger. Do you think it could show up later in life?

I haven't grown since I was 11 or 12 and I am 5 ft. I'm 17. Sometimes I think that I have a fast metabolism because I eat alot and never gain weight. Do you think it's too late now to grow taller? Also is it likely that this thyroid thing will follow me in life?

  1. Hey cutie, i recommend u to consult doctor as soon as u can......Never take a chance....coz thyroid leads to lot of other physical issues, at one point of time u will suddenly start gaining lot of weight. I tell u again....thyroid always needs a medication..Better dont take a chance.... Since im a dietician......Im suggestin u meet doctor ASAP

  2. Endocrinologist doctor would be your best help. Yeah, your height has a lot to do with thyroid. The fact that you never gain weight may be due to the overactive thyroid.

I am on the opposite side -  underactive thyroid and I have trouble to drop weight.

Make an appointment with endocrinologist. I am not sure if  it's too late to grow or not.

    Good luck to you.

  3. Yes you will always have a thyroid condition but you should be on medication that replaces what you don't have. Make for sure that you are doing blood work at least once a year unless you have other symptoms, like eating alot and not gaining. You may not grow any taller. there is a growth hormone that works but I don't know if you are to old for it. My son had it. He grew taller then me at 5'6". He had a renal problem. Make for sure you get some blood work done by you family doctor.

  4. I don't know what your thyroid problem was when you were younger whether you were hypo (low) or hyper (high) thyroid but yes it can follow you into adulthood. Most thyroid problems do not just resolve themselves and not need further treatment. Once the thyroid starts acting up and functioning abnormally is always needs to be monitored or medicated.  I have had thyroid issues since I was 12 and I'm 45 now. Unfortunately, my family doctor then that he didn't think it was bad enough to treat so I didn't get meds until I was 20.  By that time I had a goiter the size of a tube of toothpaste and had to have all kinds of scans etc to make sure it wasn't cancer. Also I went from being of a normal weight to gaining a lot of weight because of my hypothyroid issues and other problems began to show up as well.  To this day I am still dealing with major thyroid issues and my weight.

Your mom or dad needs to take this seriously and have you see your family doctor for an evaluation and blood work. If nothing comes of this your parents need to insist that you see a pediatric endocrinologist for a complete evaluation. There are several reasons why you may not be growing including thyroid or growth hormone abnormalities.  At 17 it's hard to say if you could still grow more if they get the problem figured out.

I would definitely try to get into see a doctor for an evaluation.  It's never too late.
