I had an itunes account for a long time and i barely just got and ipod but the itunes says it has to be ?

No the songs wont be deleted. It just updates itunes. Makes it bigger and better. Hope that helps. (You will get these updates from time to time they are usually for bug fixes, and fixes for other programs, etc.)

Go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download the latest version. It will not delete or modify your library in any way.

NO. Updating itunes will not effect the ipod or the itunes library. It will just update and automatically do what it needs to to keep everything as it needs to be.
