I had more than one person say they are not safe, and your answers make sense. However I live in a very cold climate and my baby is due in February, so what is safe? I used one of these bag things 9 years ago for my first baby, unaware of a safety issue. My other children were born in warm climates. The bundle me bags for the carseats look great, but won't the top part of my baby be cold? I would love some suggestions... thanks!

  1. You can't put any snow suit on a baby in a car seat. Your best bet would be to make sure your baby has on a onesie, socks, pants, and a long sleeved shirt, as well as a hat and mittens. That's how you strap baby into the seat. Then, you get a Kidopottomus type bundler. It goes around the outside of the car seat and has elastic. The bundle me items seem great, in theory, but they're unsafe, as you're putting a thick layer of fabric between your baby and the seat, which means that your baby is at risk in the event of a crash. The Kidopottomus ones stretch around the outside of the seat creating a seal and doesn't interfere with the safety harness. You can find them at Target.

  2. We did layers.  The undershirt, a footsie outfit, a footsie warm suit (not a snowsuit), and then a thicker outer suit.  When she was really young, we used the Swaddle-Me Traveler which is WONDERFUL.  And then we would put blankets around her feet.

And hats.  Hats that go down to the ear.  And always kept the hands/fingers covered.

I live in Colorado and she was born at the beginning of winter, so... yeah.  We had to get her warm.

  3. My son was born in December and I had both styles. I personally like the bag style for quick trips out of the house. Especially if we needed to leave in a hurry. But as the months went on, I switched to the regular snowsuit. I also had a carseat cover, but not a bundle me bag. Those didn't seem to practical to me.

  4. I had my son in February in Michigan, I had one snow suit that had separate legs and another that was like a sleeper with a hood that fit over his clothes and had the bag. At that age I really don't see what safety hazard they would hold. The baby cannot move at that age. They have these things now that fit over the car seat and some have a flap that goes over the head or right up to the head. If they are truly a safety hazard for newborns then you should be able to find some documentation on-line. Go on-line to stores like wal-mart or target and read the customer reviews these really have helped me. Personally I liked my two-piece sleeper/bag one, it was a bit lighter material, but I could take off the outer piece so he didn't burn up in the store.
