I had 8 teeth removed and 4 of those teeth were my wisdom teeth. I slept somewhat good. it hasn't been 2 hours. I had it done yesterday at 2:30pm and it is only 7:48am the next day. Is it normal to be in a lot of pain? I took a hydrocodene but it doesn't seem to help much. How long will i be in this much pain for?

  1. of course it`s normal to be in a lot of pain. you just had 8 teeth removed. i had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed & i was in a huge amount of pain. imagine- you got 4 more teeth removed. and depending on whether or not your teeth were impacted, they may have had to work your gums to get the teeth out. believe me, any pain you have is normal. you also might swell or get bruises on your cheeks. i had a black eye & looked like pac man for a week. if they gave you the prescription mouthwash, use it. it won't hurt. & whatever you do- don`t use ice. use a warm compact, if anything. and i`m sure sitting up on the computer isn`t helping you much. go lay down. if you have any questions, feel free to email me.

  2. Having EIGHT teeth removed at the same time is a very invasive surgery and pain will certainly be expected. Of course it depends on the person (everyone is different), but I would say on average, the pain will subside more and more each day, probably lasting not much more than a week.

Hydrocodone (Vicodin) is not always helpful with that amount of pain, and if find that you are extremely uncomfortable, contact your dentist again about either "upping" the dosage or changing meds. You main also want to take Ibuprofen for the swelling (but not at the same time as the Vicodin).

Also, keeping gel ice packs on both sides of your face will help - doctors usually recommend 20 minutes on/20 minutes off for the first 24 hours.

It is MOST important that you follow the doctor's instructions. However, only YOU know your OWN body, and if you are in too much pain, be sure to get your point across so you can cope with such a procedure.
