I purchased my Dell laptop as an XP. I upgraded to Vista and really hate it, plus it's slow. I want to return to XP. I found my XP Operating System disc. How do I do this? Someone said I had to reformat first.. what do they mean by this? Can anybody give me step by step directions to get this problem solved?

  1. it might be possible, but you may not be able to get drivers for all your hardware from dell.

check their website and download area and make sure they have xp drivers...i know the hp machine we had, vista was pre-installed and they have NO xp drivers for the motherboard at all.

  2. Well, it is easier when you have the XP installation disc.  Just insert the CD, reboot your computer, then follow the screen.  =]

Don't worry about "reformatting", since you are going to install XP over Vista.  XP will reformat the harddrive automatically.

  3. Insert the XP CD, then reboot, when it turns on press either F8 repeatedly until it asks you where you want to boot from and then choose CD/DVD drive....(F8 is not accurate since all computers are different...try F2, F8, F10 and F12)

    hope this helped

  4. here is thing, if you did a upgrade to vista using an upgrade disk, you can't just go into software/program and uninstall it. another words, you will downgrade back to xp. if not, you will need to reformat your whole entire computer and re-install all software and drivers for the computer.
