I live about 20 minutes walk from the village and it just so happens the way to get there is also the road where everyone walks there dogs. Sometimes its not bad but other times I get molested by yappy wee things trying to bite my ankle and big dalmations jumping up trying to hump my leg.

They see me coming and just run straight towars me and its like no dont even think about it.

Like I said Ive never liked dogs this might sound funny but it wasn't when I was 15 I was cycling along mindin my own business when some dog came out of no where and bit me up the a*se. I had to go to hospital.

Is there any way I can make it so Im not attractive to dogs like is there a dog repellant spray you can buy or something?

  1. It's either you don't go there, ignore the dogs or tell the owners.

  2. hates a bad word. try being nice to dog. =D

  3. The best way to handle this is to avoid areas where dogs are frequently off lead. Explain politely to dog owners that you are uncomfortable around dogs and most will do their best to keep their pets out of your personal space.

You may consider counseling to help you overcome your discomfort around dogs if you find it is impeding your day to day ability to function. p

  4. Go to the pokemart and buy a Repel. Should last for a good 200 steps.

  5. y u hate dogs, dogs is the best if u do not like dogs give it to another person who keep dog better than u do not bet it.......'i think the dogs  are better than u.'

  6. I think what you mean is that you are afraid of dogs because of a traumatic event.  I think the word "hate" is what grabs people's attention and gets the response you dislike.

Anyway, first thing to do is to not look at them or make any eye contact. Ignore them and keep moving.

When a dog begins to approach you, firmly tell the owner,"Please control your dog". If they say anything to you remind them of the leash law (say, "I'm reporting you to the dog officer if he's off lead", even if you don't mean it... some people just need the threat.)

Stay calm, a frightened or excited person stimulates the dog to be more excited as well.

When the dog gets to you, turn your back, cross your arms, hold still. Be as boring as you can be. When they don't get attention, then they tend to go away.

If you carry a walking stick that also signals the owners that you mean business. Do NOT hit a dog, that can provoke a bite. You can use it to create a barrier between you and the dog. Hold it in front of you up and down, not sideways ( that looks like a bite "target" and potential threat to dogs).

Mostly you have to just keep reminding the owners that they need to keep their dogs under control. I happen to love all dogs in spite of being bit several times over the years (I do rescue, it is par for the course). Anyway, I get the same thing when walking my (stranger) dog aggressive aussie. He is on heel and under control, then some bozo has their dog off lead letting it run amok and they are hollering,"it's ok, he's friendly!". Well, mine is NOT, get your dog under control %^%#$.

    I hate that.

Please do not spray mace. The mace thing is just for when you are being attack threatened or physically attacked. This can also provoke a bite. On top of that, mace is horrid to have in the air. Better be prepared to have burning eyes and lungs as well. Owners will probably attack you verbally at the least, perhaps physically if you spray their dog without "reason", and you may get presented with a vet bill as well.

    Hope this helps.  Remember:

    1. no eye contact, ignore and keep moving.

2.verbally tell the owners to control their dogs. Threaten to report them to the dog officer if necessary.

3.turn your back, cross your arms, look away, hold still when they approach you.Be still and boring.

    4. stay calm to avoid exciting dog and owner more.

If you are walking through a designated dog area (such as a dog park) then to be fair to the owners, change your course a little so you don't run into them as often. Avoiding the areas where you know they are most likely to be is usually your best defence. (I have to do that with my aussie so I know what a pain that is, but it works). Good luck!

  7. Personally I like dogs, but I understand not everyone does.  I think that the dogs being allowed to approach you is a lack of training on the owners part.  (And unfortunately you see that most in owners of smaller breed dogs)

That being said, a lot of dogs look for eye contact at a source of attention.  When you know your walking past a dog keep your body upright, and your face and eyes looking forward.

Aside from that the only "repellent" spray I can think of is citrus.  Most cats and dogs hate the smell of citrus.  Use lotions, or perfume.

  8. Try finding a back road that the dogs aren't walking on. Though this may lengthen the walk a bit, this is the only answer I can think of that will get rid of dogs wanting to be near you. Or next time you go down that way, politely ask the owners to keep their dogs away from you. If you get really agressive about it, then they aren't likely to respect your wishing.

ADD. I make sure that I keep my dog away from all people unless they ask if they can pat her. I think it's rude if people let their dogs jump all over strangers.

  9. No, I don't think so... Just don't go where everyone walks their dogs...

  10. Maybe the dogs HATE you!!! why don't u not stay away from them, then you wont need to invest in a repellant spray!!!

  11. I also dislike dogs, but the majority of America doesn't.  So, we're a hated minority.  In fact, many dog-owners where I live refuse to pick up after the dogs or uses leashes.  It's the nature of these self-indulgent people.   I just avoid "dog-friendly" areas altogether.  When you see a problem dog, yell "Please mind your dog" and it SOMETIMES works.

  12. Yell at them really loud and mean it !!! thats how i control my dog.

  13. I used to babysit a girl that was scared of dogs,  I used to say to them " can you please keep your dog away" They did not know for who's benefit it was for and people were generally ok with itl

I really don't like yorkies, when my Aunt was on holiday I had the task of feeding them and nasty Little *******, kept  on bitting me, and no had any sympathy for me, when i said i didn't like them.

If they were bigger dogs with that temperament, they would be put down by now.

  14. Aw sorry. I don't know of anything that would help you. Are these dogs leashed? If so, you could try yelling out to the owner that you have a phobia.

Frankly, people who allow their dogs to jump on others or nip at others are just irresponsible and shouldn't own dogs. I'd be so embarassed if my dog did that to someone.

  15. Simply tell the owners you hate dogs & you'd appreciate it if they would keep their dogs away from you.

Dogs do not see people as being attractive or unattractive.

If you think you can block 1000 users here that is wrong since the limit is 200.

  16. It's understandable that not everyone likes dogs.  Some people love snakes and spiders and keep them as pets, while others hate them....to each his own.  Other folks shouldn't be insulting you....you're not suggesting cruelty towards dogs, you're just saying you don't like them.  Nothing wrong with that.

Anyhow, firstly it's very IRRESPONSIBLE of these dog owners to let their badly behaved dogs run off-leash in public and harass passing pedestrians.  Aren't there leash laws in your area?  If there are, perhaps you could get your local law involved, have a cop come down and write a few citations.  Might make some folks think twice before letting their dogs off-leash.

There are "dog repellent" sprays- but they're based on mace/pepper spray and designed to ward off attacking dogs and are quite painful.  While you may want to carry something like this in the event you are accosted by a big, aggressive dog, I don't think it's appropriate to pepper-spray people's non-aggressive pets, even if they are being a nuisance.

You could try a high-decibel "personal alarm"....lets out a shrill, ear-splitting shriek when activated.  Or, one of those canned "air horns"....should be available at a boating shop or hardware store.  Any sort of product that lets out a loud, unpleasant noise ought to be enough to drive away a nuisance dog.

There are also several products of this type on the market, made especially for dogs, claims to give an "ultrasonic" blast of noise...but they are usually more expensive than personal alarms or air horns.

This site sells personal alarms, repellent spray and ultrasonic dog repellers (check the menu to the side for the personal alarms)....it's based in the US so if you live in another country, perhaps this will give you a good starting point to find something similar in your home country:

  17. Walk to the other side of the street or something.  You can't expect people to not walk their dogs.  And you can't expect them to steer clear of YOU all the time like it seems you want them to.  Clearly step away from the dogs -- out into the street or around them, don't look at them, etc. and they won't be as likely to come up to you.  If someone walks close by my dog and looks at her, she will look up at you hoping for attention and will sometimes step toward that person.  If someone steps off the sidewalk and around her without looking at her, she acts like she doesn't notice them.  If you're staring at the dogs to see what they're going to do, you're inviting them to come to you for attention.

What a shame that you loathe such lovely creatures though.  They're such a joy.

  18. If you use the word HATE  you deserve to be eaten alive......dogs feel your hostility  and react as a selfdefense you are a treat for them as you HATE them........stop hating them and try to feel, think positive if you change they will too........Good Luck

  19. Hate is an awful word, but it's a person's choice to use it... The best advice I can give you is carry a walking stick with you, I have 2 dogs and I use a walking stick to keep them in line. The same can be done if your walking by yourself, if a dog and it's owner approach you just stand tall and hold the stick out in front of you (not pointing the stick, just out in front of you on the ground)  inform the owner your not a dog lover and hopefully they won't get offended and move on. If a dog moves forward suddenly all you would have to do is STOMP the stick on the ground along with a command "HEY" and the dog will stop. Good luck, sorry about your experience, and if you ever want to meet 2 great dogs, let us know you'll fall for my 2 boys!

  20. i don't think there is anything like that but they can definitely sense fear and i guess its just that animal instinct that makes them run right to you. if these are regular ppl you see all the time walking the dogs maybe you could explain to them that you had a bad experience and they can keep them under better control when they see you. i mean, it shouldn't be that hard for an owner to keep control of their dog. there may be something that would be bitter to taste that they could smell that would make them not as likely to approach you i'm not really sure. i guess you could play an ipod while you're walking and see if that helps?! lol it might

  21. I know how you feel but oppisite. I hate cats more then anything but love dogs to death. The best thingi can tell you is that its not your fault the dumb owners should be responsible enough to keep them on leashes and if they have aggressive dogs then the need to take better control over them.

Try walking on the otherside of the road if you can. And if dogs are getting out of yards to get to you then inform the owners. And when you walk past a dog just let the owner know you dont fancy them (in a nice way ya know)

But im sorry dear i dont think there is a dog repellent out there that you can buy. Just try to avoid them as much as possible . Also, the dogs know that you are afraid of them so they can sense it and it  will make they act differently (usually barking and trying to get at you)

I hope this helps hunny. Sorry I couldn't give you more advice. Good luck.

  22. ignore them...specially pitbulls i have two of them and they like a whole lot of attention so as long as you don't give it to them they won't bother

  23. I got the same problem. Used to get bitten couple of times when i was a kid.

Dont like dogs, especially big ones.

    Dont make an eye-contact - 1

Dont smile - dogs take the smile (teeth) as a sign of agression- 2

In case of attack, take a stick or anything stick-like and point it at the dog, they usually get scared of the stick.

Dont turn ur back when being attacked.

  24. taze them
