Question:

I hate driving on the freeway?

I feel like I'm gonna cause an accident or get into one. There's too much going on. I feel so pressured wondering if I'm in the right lane and if I'll miss my exit. I only just got my license, but I shudder at the fact of going on the freeway, and I try to stay as local as possible.

Will this ever change? I want to be able to enjoy going on the freeway so I can go different places, but I want to build up confidence.

  1. yup, keep driving. I don't know. I have the same feeling but am an 18m. Driving is not like biking or walking when you have all sides to see. Cars are big walls. You'll get used to it. I respect your carefullness

  2. I feel the same way. I avoid it as much as possible. Making a lane change scares the heck out of me.

Maybe if you took a professional driving lesson on the freeway it would help.

  3. If you are new to driving then calm down. Just take the average roads for right now. Then, in the future have someone like your Mother or Father with you, and pratice with them in the car. Get used to the freeways with your parents or someone older until you know more. But, first rule please calm and don't panic!

  4. freeways are much safer than surface streets-less pedestrians and everyone is going the same way(mostly).

I was brought up on them in L.A. and get madder on surface streets because of the aimlessley wandering "J" walkers that lurch out in front of you w/o taking any responsibility for their own safety. No stop signs too!

  5. I remember when I had the same feeling as you. Don't worry. With lots of practice, you will become comfortable.

  6. It'll grow on you.

It takes time and practice.  Do short trips (5 - 15 miles) to familiarize yourself with the tactics in driving on Freeways.

After 30 years of driving, I still get somewhat apprehensive when I get on a different highway system but its getting easier.  I used to drive a tractor trailer rig.  I hated LA and Southern California and I refused to drive in and around New York City (not even for a truckload of Pace Picante sauce).

Rset assured, it will get easier!!!!

Take care. AND always drive CLOSE to the speed limit.
