I go to a restaurant and they automatically add the 15% tip on my bill. they dont know if the service was good.

And the other time they demanded a tip.. dont waitresses allready earn a hourly wage??...know its not much.

I feel if got crappy service I have the right to only pay my bill and leave a small or no tip at all according to my satisfaction.

  1. yeah, nothing we can do about it tho. I do work as a waitress and we get taxes on our food sales taken out of our paycheck. We have to claim a percentage of ours sales and that gets deducted from each paycheck. Most (if not all) servers get minimum wage. but the huge chunk is taken out cause they assume we get tipped that. So if a table stiffs us, its kinda coming out of our pocket. So say I gross $900, after taxes (say 150) and claimed tips if i'm lucky i get a net of $200. Cant live off that. so we rely on tips. (oh and my place we dont add gratuity).

Plus in my restaurant, tips claimed just went up so I have to start claiming even more which means even smaller paychecks.

  2. Move to Japan!  Tipping is not customary :)  But the food costs twice as much!

  3. I went to a restaurant in Orlando,Fl  and the waitress spilled two glasses of water on my lap. I felt like she should have given me some kind of discount but instead she added a 15% tip on my bill. I was quite mad but did not say anything about it because I had guest with me. I think it should be up to the customer as to whether or not they had good service. I do not think it should be the customers responsibility to pay their salary. A tip should just be an optional payment for GREAT sservice.

  4. I worked in a restaurant, I know that servers are not always the ones at fault when your service is less than satisfactory. There's so many other factors that go into your meal, but since the only person you relaly talk to is your server, they get blamed for it. Sometimes it's not any fault of their own at all, but they still are faced with a measley tip.

I decided that if I'm not really satisfied, I just leave around ten pecent so that they know I wasn't really happy, but if it wasn't their fault they aren't completely gyped out of a table.

  5. Wait staff do earn a hourly wage, but it is not very much. They depend on tips to earn their living. I grade service on things such as did they check on me. How often did they refill my drink?

  6. I agree, i live in New Mexico and that doesn't happen here but i wouldn't want somebody to assume that the service was great. i have personally left a really small tip for a waitress because she didn't really do her job. I can tell you now though a whole lot of waiters and waitresses are going to tell you something about how it is expected or something.

oh and you know what "assume"ing does right

  7. waitresses get paid well below minimum wage usually...

i agree.  i don't understand why i have to pay part of the wages of an employee of a restaurant.  why is it legal for the restaurant to pay below minimum wage?  so their food won't cost so much?  that's malarkey...

    i like that word...

    malarkey...

  8. I am a waitress and I try to make my patrons meal as enjoyable as possible. My restaurant does not automatically add the gratuity to the check. So if the service is crappy then the tip will be crappy. I think that is the way it should be. I have customers ask and wait for one of my tables to be open. And I do receive good tips for the excellent service I give. Tips are my main source of income. So I strive hard to please my customers.

  9. Yeah, they should just work it into the prices in the first place, right? These 'rules' about tips make the tips meaningless.
