I live in Pakistan, where all my ISP gives me is an ethernet cable which i hook up to the back of my PC. When i fire up my browser, it takes me to my ISP's login page where i enter my un and pw to connect. I just bought an ipod touch cuz i loved the idea of browsing the web and using all the web-based apps portably (i don't have my laptop here). Back in the States, my ISP gave me a DSL modem, so i knew exactly how to install WIFI. But here, all I get is a LAN cable, so I have no idea what kind of WIFI router to buy and how to go about installing it. I know that the router comes with an ethernet cable too, so i don't quite understand which cable to put where? (back of the pc/router) I need help guys!!! i wanna enjoy WIFI :( Please tell me what to buy and how to install it; u may even give links to some kind of good tutorial websites. I'm basically confused cuz i don't have a modem from my ISP...just a stinkin LAN cable :S Under TYPE of internet connection, i think what i have classifies as a wired LAN connection at 512kbps.Oh and another thing, is there something i can buy that i can plug in my desktops USB port and send out wifi signals like a wifi router? Thanks for your time :)

  1. I'm not following where the LAN cable connects from, I'm assuming the wall or something.

You should be able to install a wireless router just like you did before...pretend the existing wire is coming from a modem.

    1. unplug the wire from the back of your computer

    2. plug that into your router's WAN/uplink/internet port

    3. connect the wire that came with your router to one of your router's LAN ports and the other end to your computer's network card

    4. configure the router for security or whatever

Then just set up the security/etc per the directions that come with your router.

Most (all the ones I know of) router manufacturers have tech support that will help you if it doesn't work the way you expect.

  2. usually wifi routers have two options..

    1) INPUT from telephone circuit..

    2) OUTPUT to four nodes..

if this is wat u have, try inserting ur LAN cable in one of these output boxes (some of them may b dual socket- IN and OUT)

cheaper wifi routers have only one RJ45 Input type and 4 output sockets..if thats the case, its all done !

  3. I'd recommend a Linksys WRT54G or 54GS, if you can get them there.

Plug take the cable out of the computer and plug it into the Internet jack of the router.  Connect the cable that comes with the router from one of the numbered jacks on the router (the 4 together) into the computer (where you removed the other one).  Plug the router power cable into the router.  Plug the power pack into the wall.

Other than setting the iPod up, you're done.
