In other words, I'd like to determine whether they're valid email addresses *before* I send them a newsletter. Is there a way to do this?

  1. Well you can send a test email to your distribution list with a read receipt to verify.

  2. If you are using Firefox, there is this extension Temporary Inbox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox... which you could use temporarily to verify the validity of these 1000 email addresses without letting them know your legitimate email address. Then you could use http://www.temporaryinbox.com/ to wait for the response for each email you sent.

"Ping" is only used for host address, thus an email say me@yahoo.com would only ping the yahoo.com part but not the "me" part.
