I have 12 hours lay-over in Rome before heading to Turin?

Question

I arrive in Rome - Fiumicino @ 7:35 am and depart to Turin @ 9:30pm. I am travelling with 2 other friends and we would like to see the following (ambitiously) sites:

- The Spanish Steps

- The Pantheon

- Vatican City

- The Colosseum

- Piazza NAvona

- The Roman Forum

- Trevi Fountain

Since it is our first time in Rome I have no idea what is the best way and ecomomically friendly way to proceed. Please help us in determining the best route and the best order to visit these sites. I hear the lines to The Colosseum are crazy, but we would be prefectly content with admiring from outside if necessary. Please include a couple of food and beverage stops along the way. I am driven to accomplish this without my friends passing out, maybe I am too ambitious but who knows when I will be travelling through Rome again. Unfortunately our week in Turin is all business morning to night. Thanks!!!!

You have plenty of time to see a lot of Rome, at least superficially from the outside.

If you arrive at Fiumicino airport, you can get a cab from the airport, but it's cheaper to take the train. The Leonardo Express runs directly from the airport to Roma Termini train station every 30 minutes - it's a 35 minute ride (about 11 euro). airport information in English is available at: http://www.adr.it/content.asp?L=3&idmen=...

If you arrive at Ciampino airport (15 km from the center of Rome; approximately 10 miles), there's a bus into town, or a short shuttle ride to the train station, or taxis. Airport information: http://www.adr.it/content.asp?L=3&idmen=...

From the Roma Termini train station, you can walk down via Cavour or take the Metro to get to the Colosseum. The other suggestion to get a Roma pass is a good idea. Many of the other Roman sites, the Forum, the Pallatine Hills, Circus Maximus are in that area.

From this area, you can head along the street to the Vittoriano and then on to the area around the Pantheon (my favorite of Rome's attractions). Trevi fountain and Piazza Navonna aren't far from the Pantheon, but are in opposite directions. If you spot the oblisk on the elephant's back not far from the Pantheon, you're at Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. It's worth going in.

Just get a decent tourist map and you can plan out your own route hitting the things that interest you.

There are food stands and restaurants all over. Personally, I usually don't eat right at the attractions, but there will be good, less expensive options within a few blocks of most places. To maximize your sightseeing time, you might want to pick up panini rather than taking time in a restaurant. Meals here tend to be more relaxed and time consuming than in the US. Just a pasta or a pizza shouldn't take too long though if you want to sit a while.

Just make sure you leave enough time to get back to the airport in the evening.

Take the "leonardo express" to Termini, and the B Line to Colosseo.

Walking from there to Piazza Venezia you have the Forums right and left.

From Piazza Venezia take Via del Corso: The Pantheon and Piazza Navona are on your left, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps on your right.  You'll have to walk a lot, but with a map is easy to find them all.

In Piazza di Spagna (spanish steps) take the A Line to Ottaviano, and walk 10 minutes to vatican city.

Outside Ottaviano station there is a great typical restaurant, called "Il Ciociaro".
