  1. Cookies aren't a bad thing in general, in fact most of the "scary cookie" problems of yore are now just legend. McAffee on the other hand takes over your system to such a degree that it may as well be a virus itself.

AVG has long been a wildly popular, free Anti-Virus scanner. It also doesn't take over your machine.

  2. Hi, firstly i would like to say COOKIES ARE NOT HARMFUL, they're just ways for websites to remeber the previous setting you entered into them, eg if i edit my bbc.co.uk page the cookie will remeber the setting so DON'T WORRY. if you really want to remove cookies then (consiering your using Internet Explorer 7 if not then just ask and i'll tell you what to do on your browser) click on the tools button (top right) the first thing you will see is delete browsing history. this opens up a window and on there click delete cookies. simple as! as for anti virus  I would absolutely 100% recommend this, just so you know it got an award for being one of the most popular downloads on CNET's Download.com, (hope this means something to you. It't the most secure dowload website on the net). I would recommend the free version for your standard home computer. It is Called AVG FREE 8.0 here's a link for the site so you can check it out and download it. Just to sell it to you a bit more!, it will update itself EVERY DAY and is more secure and sufficient than a Nortan Internet Security Package and with this new 8.0 version it will tell you if a link for a Google or Yahoo or Live search is safe here's the link http://free.avg.com/ By The Way I Don't even work for AVG! LOL

  3. I have been using Avast.  You can get a free 30 day trial here.

  4. First of all cookies are not bad things. Even sites like Yahoo Answers have cookies. When you log in, things like your password are stored in cookies. This is how your computer knows that you are still logged in as you go from page to page. The cookie passes on the knowledge that you have been logged into yahoo, therefore you don't have to type your username and password each time you look at a new page.

It is entirely possible however, that you have infections on your PC. McAfee is honestly very weak as an antivirus software. Go for either AVG Free Edition

    http://free.avg.com/

    or Avast Free Edition

    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-...

Both of them are easy to use and more effective than McAfee.

Those will take care of your viruses. After that I recommend Ad Aware 2008

    http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_fr...

    and Spybot S&D

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index...

Make sure you keep whichever antivirus you choose up to date, and run both spybot and Ad-aware 2-4 times a month. They do an amazing job of keeping your PC clean, and either of the 2 anti-virus softwares that I recommended will keep you in the free and clear 99% of the time.

  5. spybot.
