  1. why not ask them what they want to take? at 14, your daughter will definitely have her own opinions on what she wants to do in her spare time...

  2. jujitsu, GOOD idea to put them in a martial arts at that age, i wish my parents did when i was that old...:(.

  3. I think kickboxing would be great, assuming they both want to start it.  It's fun, usually quick paced, reasonably good for self defense, and a fine basic art to begin training.

I'm thinking the boy will like the kicks and punches, and the girl will be glad she doesn't have to grapple - at that age kids are quite body conscious, and grabbing and wrestling can be uncomfortable. Once they have some kickboxing experience they may want to stick with it or maybe switch.  Hapkido is a more military-based combat form for counter attacking and self defense, and jujitsu is a very well rounded style including throws, locks, strikes, chokes, etc.

Kickboxing sounds like a fine choice, but I would do as another poster states and include the kids in this decision.  Check out a few schools, meet the instructors and make sure the kids feel comfortable before beginning classes.  I'm sure the kids have questions - have them put together a list of questions - write it down and make sure their questions are answered before you commit to a class.

    Good luck

  4. My husband and my children do Judo.  My husband started at 18, he is now 52, sensei. , my 12 year old son, 16 year old son, and 12 year old daughter play.  Jujitsu is a little more aggressive, weapons usually are involved.  Judo is considered the gentle way, more grappling and pins, throws.   I would look into Judo.  It gives my daughter self confidence but also teaches the kids discipline.
