I have 2 pet ducks that we bought when they were one week old and were told they were both female. However they are about 2.5 months old and one is obviously male. I noticed the male aggressively mounting the female in the pond today. Would they be able to mate if access to the pond was cut off?

Also, when will the female start laying and how soon are they fertilized? Is there a way to prevent fertilized eggs? Why are they mating when not sexually mature?

  1. They can mate anywhere! Water or not they can. I am not sure when she will start laying but if you don't want ducklings keep them apart or get another female instead of male.

  2. i own ducks also and i can tell you they don't need water to mate. only way to keep them from mating is to separate them, if you are opposed to having baby ducks then gather the eggs as soon as they are laid. Duck eggs are good to eat. They taste just like a chicken egg.

  3. Yes, they can mate in and out of water. For some reasone they like to do it in the water, lol. If you get rid of the pond you can buy them a kiddy pool, onr of those hard plastic ones. Thats what I have for mine.

They can start to lay at 5-6 months of age or in the spring weather. Usually if they mate befor they lay an egg it will be fertiel. Most lily all of the eggs will be fertile. Even wihtout a male they can carry the sperm for a couple weeks. There is a way, if you separate the males from them female. I dont know if there is anything segically but theats the sure way is to separate them. You can have cue babies running around and sell them. Most of the time thatch breed doesnt set a lot. You hae to use an incubator so I dont think that you would have to worrie about that. I have seen some doo that, Are you sure they are actually mating. Some look but they are fighing. If the male is grabong the females back of the neck, they are bobbing there heads up and down, and the male wags his tail as he moves then they are mating but if no head bobbing then thery arnt. OSme are curious and are really excited and will do tht.
