My rats love to have pieces of wood. They love small wooden chunks about the size of a cigarette box and they love flat pieces of wood as well.

I usually go into my local Mitre 10, a hardware store, into the wood purchasing part. You can sometimes get off cuts for free and can usually get them for very little money.

The rats love them and they are even good for them. They use them to drag around and to gnaw on. It saves the furniture!!!

It is very important that you get real wood, DON'T get MDF or chipboard as the glues can be toxic to rats and people as well. Get some nice radiata pine or something like that.

When I get new pieces I build little card houses and the rats enjoy tearing them down and burying the pieces. They also love it if you smear a cut apple across the pieces of wood.
