Inka was the first rat we got. She loves attention full on. Pearl loves attention but must be in the cage. OTHERWISE SHE FREAKS OUT. She poops and pisses if taken out of the cage on her own will. Inka is just so different. I was wondering if anyone knows why Pearl is like that.

  1. Agoraphobia.  When people are afraid to leave the safety of their home, Pearl is afraid to leave the safety of her cage.  It is a fear of open spaces.  Rats think a lot like humans on a basic instinct level, that is why they are used in labs.

  2. Either they had very different experiences before you got them, or they have different genetically determined temperaments, or a combination of both.  Have you taken Pearl out for any length of time?  Most rats, even if they had never been handled before, would get used to the idea in about 20 minutes.  That is, unless the rat has been abused a lot before you got her, and so has learned to be afraid.  Even if she was, you could probably get her used to the idea in time.  But a few rats just have a difficult temperament.

I once got a rat because the previous owner's kids were being mean to her.  This rat was terrified of being handled when I first got her, but she never bit.  It took me a while, but I kept handling her, and in time she became the most affectionate rat I had.

  3. My best guess is that other animals like rats have different temperments and personalities just like humans do!

    BTW, cute names!
