  1. Hydrangeas will ONLY flower on last year’s wood (growth). Even if they are getting minimal light – your shrub may not get covered with blossoms but you would have SOMETHING.

The only thing I can think of – is you are pruning them too much and/or too late in the season. You are removing all of next year’s flowers.

If you want to save the flowers for a bouquet or drying, try to remove as little stem as possible. You can always extend the stem with a wire or skewer for flower arrangements in the future.

Do a ‘search’ (or ‘Google’), Hydrangea Culture or Pruning Hydrangeas or Proper Care of Hydrangeas.

You will find all the information you need.

Good luck. They are beautiful shrubs and I can see why you would be upset they are not flowering.

  2. Yeah I agree - pruning. I recommend not pruning after July as next years flowers are forming

A late cold snap in spring can do it but 4 years straight ????

Not enough sun will do it and morning is best. If you continued to have very small blooms then I would say the sunlight is the culprit. About 3 hours is enough.

Its too late to prune this year and I hope you ha-vent as then this will test out theory
