You actually have a 512mb stick of memory.

That's just how some computers report it.

To make sure you are getting the best performance - try disabling some features in windows, or press ctrl+alt+del and bring up the task manager, switch to processes, and make a list.

Search online for information on how (and if) to remove each item.

Get rid of any norton or mccaffee anti-virus junk - it is useless and takes up a ton of memory to just sit there and annoy you.

Get AVG and use it to scan your machine occasionally, and grab a copy of lavasoft's 'adaware personal' while you are at it.

If you are running any memory heavy applications - you might consider upgrading, adding another 512mb stick - or more depending on your configuration.

Take it out and put in 512

Chances are though, that you do have 512MB of RAM, just that the system doesn't recognize the rest.
