You can try to lend it out on Prosper. It is a P2P lending site. You can simply invest $50 on each loan to diversify your risk. Interest rate is from 7% to 35%. I think 7% loan is good for you to get started on. You can do some research before you join. Business Week had a few articles talking about it. Good Luck!

It depends on how your overall financial situation looks. The basic guide is that you have secure low risk investments that make up 30 to 50 percent of your portfolio with 30 percent in medium risk investments an the remainder in higher risk investments. I have been in this business since 1997, and when people ask me that question, I tell them it is in their best interest to first consult an independent financial advisor.

There are a lot of factors to consider--how much of your money you are willing to lose, how much return you want in x period of time, your present financial responsibilities, cash flow, etc.

It may not be convenient, but it will work well for you in the long run.

Use an online brokerage firm that has good beginner qualitys {like tutorials or easy to understand set up}, i use zecco, better then schwab, etrade, etc. they are the only ones with free stock trades, no minumums..all the others will charge you fees for trading, but compare and see for yourself. Make sure you have a 3 month emergency fund saved up before you hit the market.  Many good stacks are down with the market now.  If you have a long term look at some of the top Dow stocks (GE, MMM, PFE).

A safer approach would be mutual funds.  Large Cap, small cap and international types.

I´ve been investing for more than 20 years and trading for almost 14, and I can tell you that if you want to make BIG and FAST profits, I recommend you trading rather than investing, trading can help you to go from rags to rich.
