I have $6000 dollars to spend. My grandma has a 1995 jaguar xj6 vanden plas in great condition. she would be willing to sell it to me for $6000. I would really like a car with more performance though. I want a car that will turn heads and does not need after market parts other then an intake filter. Please help me make up my mind in what to get.

  1. Are you sure you have gas money for that car?

My friend has a 95 XJ6 Sovereign and he says it gets 16 MPGs on PREMIUM gas.  On a good day.  Premium is required.

You may want to think this one over just a bit.

  2. Jaguars of that time are notoriously unreliable and expensive to fix.  I would recommend you avoid it.  Not sure what you can get for 6 grand that will do everything you want but the Jag is a bad move.

  3. In the 90s I had a neighbor with two Jags and they spent less time in the garage than at the dealer. I've heard from them and from several others that Jaguars are cars where you need "two to run as one." Meaning you'll need two cars so there's usually one available while the other is in for service. Bottom line: Jaguars are notoriously unreliable and expensive to fix. Even salespeople will tell you that older Jags are not for the faint of heart (and wallet).

It may be beautiful but be prepared if you plan to make it your daily driver. I would say tread carefully and have it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic to check for signs of trouble. If you do go forward with it, make sure you've got $1000 set aside each year for a "just in case" situation.

  4. get a japanese car or maybe a reliable US car. All cars break down but the luxury cars cost more to fix

  5. Nice looking car but if all you have is 6K to spend you will probably run in to problems with maintenance and repair cost unless you have a fat wallet when when it breaks or needs repair. For chuckles call the jaguar dealer next week and see what it cost to replace the starter with labor.  If you like the style check on E-bay for the 70's and 80's models. Lots of folks are swapping everything over to a chevy 350 drivetrain.  Very cheap and accessible parts with more power than the straight 6 jag put in them. Easy to work on also.

  6. If you have $6000 to spend, find a car for $3,000 to $4,000. Then you can have a couple thou for ga$, in$urance, repair$ and social necessities.

You really don't want all you money tied up into a car. You can get a real nice car for $3,000, just get it checked out first.
