  2. You can extend COBRA for up to 11 additional months if you become disabled within the first 60 days of the COBRA coverage. The disability must be recognized by the Social Security Administration.

    If you have a pre-existing condition that would keep you from obtaining individual insurance your only option other than another group policy would be a HIPAA policy. A HIPAA policy would continue your coverage after you've exhausted COBRA and is offered by most insurance companies. The government guarantees that you'll be offered a policy but doesn't guarantee the premium. A premium of 3 or 4 times the normal premium is not unusual.
