I have Denon AVR-1708 and need help.?

I have Denon AVR-1708 and im trying to get some things done. 1 Thing is that I have my dvd player or xbox set up to the reciever using hdmi and then i have the reciever to my tv using hdmi. The proble is the speakers that are connected with surround sound dont work with the dvd or xbox..but when i use the radio on the reviever the audio on the surround sound speakers work. I have a 7.1 channel and the manuel is no help. I am fresh out of ideas. what should i do?

You are going to have to hook up separate digital audio connections from the xbox (optical) and the dvd (usually optical or coax you don't need to use both)  The HDMI connection on that receiver will not support audio, it says that on page 10 as the first note.  Once you plug in the digital audio wires and set it up in the menu set up screen you will be good to go.
