Do I need to repatch, or will the extra watering help it to regrow?

  1. Watering won't help.  If it is too hot (like over 85 all day) the grass may go dormant.  Its a heat thing, not a water thing.

Overwatering may actually kill the grass if the roots rot from the soggy soil.

Water as usual (inch a week of so) deeply.  Some of my grass I water once a month and it does nicely.  Some I water twice a week and it does the same in this heat.

Just let it be untill fall gets here and things cool down some.

  2. You may want to aerate the ground.  If it is compacted, the fescue has a hard time establishing good roots, making the heat even more destructive.

  3. It is just not possible in some places to beat the heat.  I have brown patches by now on the areas with the most sun even with frequent watering.  It will come back when the fall rains come.  It has been doing this for 30 years now.  Water is just not that cheap or available to keep it green.  You should water it 1" per week (measure in a shallow bowl laid on the grass). any more is wasted. It is better to water it deeper and less often than every day.

  4. The problem with Fescue is it's a bunch grass so it doesn't spread and fill in like Kentucky Bluegrass would.  You're going to have to seed the dead patches if you want a thick lawn.
