My friend has full coverage insurance. Someone vandalized his car destroying the hood and busted the front window out. Will the insurance company cover this?

Someone also advised us that it would be better to report the car stolen and they would cover it once it's found with the damage. Is this true?

we really need some advice on this one. Don't want to be stuck having to pay the costs for all this damage.

Also, what steps he should take first, i.e - informing the police, ect?

  1. I've gone through the similiar thing -- still a little bit painful, here is the resource help me out.http://car-insurance.easyideas4u.info/ca...

  2. File a police report but report it properly as vandalizim.  You don't want to report a car as being stolen because that would be fraud since the car really wasn't stolen!! So don't listen to that person who said to report it as being stolen!!!!!!!!  Insurance companies ALWAYS take theft claims and hand them over to special investigative units within the claim department to make sure that the theft is true... if they find out it is not true they WILL turn your friend over for insurance fraud!

These are the steps your friend should take:

    1) call the police and file a report of vandalism

    2) call the insurance company and file a claim with the police report number (if no number is provided then at least give the insurance company the officer's name and the department where the police report was filed)

The insurance company should provide coverage for vandalism under comprehensive coverage.  Your friend will need to pay their comprehensive deductible in order to have their car fixed, as long as they have this coverage, and if the police figure out who did the vandalism then your friends insurance company will go after the other person who is legally responsible for this happening and if any money is recovered from the other person, then your friend should get their deductible back.

Your friend will not have to pay for ALL the damage if he/she has comprehensive coverage, just the deductible.

Hope this helps and best of luck to your friend!!

  3. Hi Bill

My advice is to look at the insurance policy to find out what you are covered for, what you aren't and what the excess premiums are. Insurance policies differ immensely person to person, depending on age health previous accidents, neighbourhood etc. etc.  Then ask yourself the question is it worth breaking the law for such a small amount of money, even though it may feel like a huge amount to you right now.  Its not just getting past the Police, but also the loss adjusters from the insurance company, who are loads worse. They have seen and heard every trick in the book, and once they think they have found a scam the don't give up.  They just keep coming, knocking on the door when you least want them with just one more question.

    I speak from experience

  4. I would most defenitely file a police report first, his full coverage insurance will cover the damage, however he will have to pay the deductible.  In most States glass is replaced at no charge, to be certain I would just ask the insurance company or review his policy first. Regardless, that is what full coverage is for, I also know that if your friend has homeowners insurance depending on if the car was at his home at the time, he could turn it in on that if the deductible is cheaper.  Good luck to your friend, and people are so thoughless to vandalize someone else's property.. Makes me sooooo mad!!   :0)

  5. Insurance should cover vandalism.  Call the police and report the vandalism.  Call the insurance company and file a claim.

If you tell the police it was stolen when it was not then you will go to jail for filing a false police report.

  6. If he has full coverage then he has some form of comprehensive coverage.  The only problem is that if he has a deductible then he's going to have to pay that amount before he will be able to have the damage repaired.

An act of God and vandalism fall under comprehensive.  I'm not sure...but vehicle theft may be covered under the same designation.

DO NOT commit insurance fraud...which is what reporting the car stolen would be.

Call the police, file a report, get the report number, and then have your friend file a claim with his company.  Even if he has a $500 deductible it sounds as if there is far more than $500 worth of damage.  Don't be afraid to report this to his company...it's what he pays insurance for.
