Hi all. Need suggestions. I fall asleep quickly but almost every night wake up often and usually by 3 or 4 am can't sleep any more. I'm restless, feel tense, I can't fight it, so I leave the room so I don't wake up my husband. I try watching boring TV to get tired again, go on the computer (bad, it wakes me up), try reading. It's turned into a nasty cycle that I can't seem to break and it is so hard cause I'm very tired during the day and affects my work. Any suggestions?

  1. Melatonin 10 mg.  It's over the counter medicine.

  2. Be aware if there is something waking you up. Light? Sounds? Pain? If you can pinpoint it and see if there is anything you can do.

If not, try to do relaxing things when you do get up. Instead of tv and computer, try knitting, or slather some lotion all over your arms and legs and take your time rubbing it in.

Don't look at the clock. I was waking up like you, and had the best luck when I simply turned the alarm clock around. If I didn't know what time it was, I wasn't annoyed and it was easier for me to fall back asleep.

If it persists, talk to your doctor.

  3. Exercise in the day, don´t go to bed until you are tired. And also sometimes you are worried about something. Think about it. It often happens insomnia is a symptom of a trouble you have, and at times you even aren´t aware of having it. If you wake up try studying, anything. Every time I study something I fall asleep. Good luck, and try not to think about the insomnia, eventually you will sleep.
