an airconditioner draws a very high overload current each time the compressor starts up. most inverters are not capable of providing high surge current, so it is not recommeded. the electrical data plate on the air conditioner will provide the operating current/power and it may also give the the maximum current draw, compare that to the inverter specs.  off hand i would say 5000 btu sounds too big for a 1 kw power source .
