I have set the settings on the ps3 to play 1080p and the games boxes say 1080p and so do the blu-ray movies and it constantly play on 720p. i have gone back and verified that the settings are correct and the picture looks pixely and not as smooth as i have seen it before. i have hd tv and the hd picture is fine on there but not as sharp as it should. the tv is new a bravia 40s4100 and the ps3 was purchased today and i had another ps3 hooked up on it to verify and it was the same way. any suggestions?

  1. Go to Settings > Video Settings > HDMI > Manual and make sure every box is checked.  Try unchecking 720p and seeing if your Blurays output in 1080p.  Games aren't a reliable method of checking because not every game supports 1080p.  Definitely try a Bluray.  It could be that the PS3 is detecting something funny from your television, causing it to send 720p signals instead of 1080p.  It seems to be a TV issue since you've tried 2 PS3s.  Have you tried a second HDMI cable?

Also consider trying a different HDMI port on your TV and see if that fixes the issue.

You can also reset the video/audio settings totally to see if that helps.  When the PS3 is on standby, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds (it will beep twice).  You should see the prompt to configure HDMI then.

  2. go to ps3 display settings, then hdmi and tick only 720p(u need 720p cause some games r not 1080p) and 1080p and untick the rest (there will be one setting which u cant change) and press finish and try to play the game again....b4 the "Playstation 3" shows on the screen ur tv should say hdmi 1080p..well umm mine does im not sure about bravia tvs, im using a panasonic plasma tv. Also check ur tv settings, check if the sharpness is too low then increase it.

Or try using a different hdmi port, im sure ur tv has more than one.

or mayb hdmi cable problem? borrow a friend's one to check.

Thats all i can think of =/

  3. YOU NEED A HDMI CABLE IN ORDER TO LOOK HD

    AND PLAY BLUERAY

    ;)

no hdmi  THE GRAPHICS WILL LOOK KINDA Cheap

  4. search for the tv specs again. maybe it can only support  100i and not 100p. or worse, only 720p.
