  1. id be careful....a friend of mine tried this with a 40 horse evinrude and it weighed the back down so bad when he shot the gas to it, it doved the transom down and filled it full of water.....Go with about a 10hp or no more than a 15.....You would be surprised as to what a 3-5 hp would do for your little boat


  2. There should be a plate on the boat that has the load capacity and max horsepower for the boat. If it has worn off, check a similar boat. Most 12 foot jon boats have a max hp rating of 10 or less. If you try to put on more, it may be too heavy for the transom, and welds can crack. It will also be very heavy, and waves may wash over the back of the boat.

  3. We have a 12 foot alum boat and have a 10 hp merc on it and it's too big for the boat, it will lift the front of the boat out of the water at a 1/4 throtle, so I recomment you stay with a 10 or smaller.

  5. My 1456 is 20hp>Flat bottom> Look on line under the brand> Or look at the tag on the transom> You need a 15" mid shaft> 35=40hp don't have them>
