I have a 12 hp Tecumseh motor that gets oil in the carb and muffler, gets hot and smokes. What causes this?

  1. if you have a 2 cycle engine,oil is add to the gas,and you might not have the correct ratio ( gas and oil mix) to much oil would cause this. if it a 4 cycle engine you might have to much oil in crank case,or you might have turn the engine over on it side and oil ran in your carb.good luck.


  2. An old worn engine with poor rings will do this. It may still run for awhile that way though. Some engines have a crankcase vent tube into the intake. you can reroute this tube to blow out the side.

  3. Worn out piston, rings and cylinder wall,usually caused by dirt ingestion.Or if it is a overhead valved engine, it could be a blown head gasket.

  4. The oil level is the crankcase is too high.  The oil will go through the crankcase vent line into the air filter box and into the carb from there.
