How to use them. Which sippy cup worked the best for you? Handles, no handles? I've tried a few such as Gerber ( transitioning one) Some Playtex one, with handles, and I also bought a cheaper one at Walmart, that doesn't have any of the valves in it, you just sort of bite on it and the milk comes out pretty easy.

  1. I had the same problem with my 8 month old.  So I started her on a cup with a straw because they understand the sucking thati s required.  Then slowly introduce the sippy cup after awhile.  Especially if they have been only breastfed they will not understand the sippy cup.

  2. Are you just starting cups without having tried it before? If so, that may be your problem. At around 6 months I started to introduce the cup to my kids, even though they didn't quite get it for awhile. Then when they did, I let them have a cup at every meal, until eventually at around a year old I took one bottle away at a time. I'm in that process with my daughter who just turned one also. If this is the first your son has seen of cups then he will need a little time to get used to it. Keep trying all the different cups to see what he takes to. My kids loved the handles, but I know ones that didn't. Your son will eventually let you know. It will just take some time. My daughter had a few rough days here cause I took away her afternoon bottle - for the first couple days she ignored the cup, but since she always had it at meal time, she took it then. Today though, she took her cup all day long. Time, and patience. He'll learn.

  3. I have a sippie cup with a straw built in that I started my son on.  It worked pretty good.  Also, I started my son on water/juice in his sippie cup but I still cant get him to take his milk out of it.  try keeping the milk in the bottle for now and give him other things in the sippie cup.

  4. Well with my daughter because she didnt understand at first, is I took the valve out and kind of tipped it into her mouth and she found out that there is liquid in there. Then afterward I put the no drip valve back in and she knew to suck on it to get the juice out. I like the gerber ones.

  5. you've started a bit late.  generally kids start on cups at 6 months of age -when they are learning to eat solids.  give him one cup with water -he'll figure it out.

  6. My baby loves the nuby at walmart. Don't worry. When he is hungry he will use he cup. Good luck.

  7. I skipped the sippy cups and just used a cup and straw!

  8. My daughter didn't get it either. We started trying cups at 6 months, too. He may not like what you are putting in the cup. My daughter refuses to drink milk. At 12 mos, I tried. She just doesn't like it. She finally got it after about a week. She just won't drink milk from it. We still give her a bottle with the toddler formula. I am stopping that as soon as it's gone, though. Try juice or water in the cup. We also buy the calcium fortified oj and she eats a lot of other dairy products to get her calcium. Good luck. Keep trying, he will get it.

  9. Definitely ones with a handle.

There are all kinds of sippy cups, with all kinds of spouts. There are even bottles that transition from a regular bottle to a bottle with handles to a sippy cup with a lid and straw to a regular toddler cup. Sippy cups aren't too expensive, so it's worth letting your son test-drive several if the one in hand isn't working. Give him several tries with each one you try. He needs to get use to each one before you know which one is right for him.

This one is one of the best ones I think to begin with because of the long spout.
