I have a 13 year old ste[daughter. She doesn't think she needs to shower but once a week. (YUK) Why?

Why doesn't she realize that girls get stinky much quicker than boys? (I don't think her Mom (which she lives with) has good personal hygiene either.)

There is clearly a fundamental disconnect here.

Using my psychology classes, I would suggest that she likely equates showering daily to "growing up", as these are things adults worry about more than children. I would wager she has some fear about moving on into adulthood. You will need to address and assuage these fears before addressing the symptoms. If you make her interested in looking pretty and being popular, she will take it to the next step. However, this is a VERY dangerous path to follow, especially with a girl so stubborn. You could damage her self-esteem if you go too far into promoting the "prettiness" thing, because she may she can never do enough.

i think you should sit her down and talk to her about personal hygiene

and tell her that if she doesn't shower people are gonna make fun  of her. and not want to sit next to her.

tell her that the water is her friend

and that she should use it more often, maybe even like everyday

Well, i'm 14 and i forget to shower a lot, especially if i straten my hair. I still try to shower alot though. Probably gets it from her mum though so maybe scare her into it like stats of something gross or something. We can be pretty stubborn sometimes

i used to be kinda like that like i would want to but i didnt feel like it but i was wayyyy younger i got better when my dad bought one of those fun nossles on the shower you can get that u can change the way the water flows and stuff also like sum one said b4 buy alot of bath and body works stuff like bath confettii and bath beads that makes it fun!!!

Since her mom isn't teaching her, and she won't take advice from you, get someone else to have a talk to her.  Where is her dad?  Maybe an aunt, or even a school guidance counselor, or school nurse.

EWW her hair must get really greasy...yuck. Maybe she thinks showering is too time consuming, and its a pain to have to dry her hair all the time too.  mean thats what i used to think when i was younger. But i was 8, and i took at least 3-4 showers a week. Now i take them everyday. i like taking showers. But before, my parents MADE me take a shower. They reminded me at least 3 times every night to go take a shwoer. Haha tell her boys dont like to date stinky girls, dirty girls.  Buy her some really nice fun shampoo and body wash. maybe redesign her bathroomm. make her want to take a shower.

she must be English i was on holiday in London last year and traveled on the tube and the smell was unbelievable my sister who is obese does not use a deodorant as most poms and i shower up to 3 times a day in the summer i get up Shower clean my teeth dry off Shave dress do what ever usually ride my motorcycle and by lunch time it is 35 degrees shower put on light clothes and if i go out in the evening i may shower again

If you don't wash all over at least every day your body is open to all kind of problems crutch itch  scalp itch open sores Tiena and because you are not clean you can pass on disease to your family like conjunctavitus common cold, flu and several gastrointestinal disorders, such as infectious diarrhea

and you attract flies which are the biggest carrier of disease which can cause cold sores

and who wants to be with someone who stinks and i used to think that girls were the cleaner s*x

Nasty, every time she is around you, throw water and soap at her and/or whenever she is around, constantly spray air freshener, she should, if she isn't too dense, get the point.  Being funky is not cool.   God Bless.

when i was about 9 i was afraid of the shower lol. suggest a bath maybe? I am 13 now and I get showers I just had to get baths for a while and then everynow and then my mom would make me shower and now I shower full time. So just ease into it. Also tell her she smells super bad and no one will be her friend if she doesn;t shower XD

13 is just the right age for a girl to learn all about bacteria, fungus, crotch rot, athletes' foot and perhaps leprosy.

Ten to thirteen  is the age we here the words YUK!, and EWE! So capitalize on her interests to instruct her in hygiene.  Just because Mom is fragrant doesn't mean she taught the kid anything.

Tell her that when girls are a teenager they need to start showering everyday. And when she gets mad and says no. Then say "okay, but don't come crying to me when your friends don't want to sit with you at lunch because they say you smell bad, because personally, i wouldn't want to sick next to someone thats smelly."

my sister used to hate having a shower too and my mum ended up taking her to the body shop and letting her chose some nice body wash and things and then all of a sudden she wouldn't stop having showers. goodluck!

Well one reason she might do this is because she thinks that it's actually good for your hair to not wash it everyday (which is true but only showering once a week is too extreme). I would try to convince her to wash every other day. She'll stay clean and she won't gripe since she won't have to shower every day.

wow that's really sad.  i would buy her a bunch of fun sample size shower gels and perfumed soaps and then be dead honest and tell her anyone age 11 and up needs a shower daily.  Good luck!

OH MY GOODNESS!!! i have to shower twice a day

Please, sit her down and have a talk with her about B.O.!!!! tell her the "difference" between boys and girls and why girls can get preettttyyy FUNKY! also remind her no one likes to be around smelly or dirty people. kids are mean these days and that is the #1 reason for kids to pick on others!! remind her she sweats everyday and even though she may not notice her armpit smelling, EVERYONE ELSE DOES!!! tell her it will only help her in the end, not HURT her!
