It is a 3ft tank and we want to buy an external filter but I don't know how many times it should turn the water over in an hour?

  1. Gallons x 10 I would recommend a penguin 330 or emperor 400

    30x10=300 so at least that.

  2. 8 to 10 times an hour is the reccommended turnover rate.  So you should get a filter that has a gph (gallons per hour) rate of at least 300gph.

    Personally, I would go for one of the Marineland filters that has a 400 plus gph.  In this case, more is better.

  3. anywhere from 5x to 10x depending what kind of stuff is in it

    5x per hour is a good minimum

  4. The turn over has to be automatic, you dont have to worry about that.
