  1. There are no-drill mounts, but I don't trust them. If your '03 is already a sporter, I'd drill it. It might cost a little, but the fact is that no-drill mounts don't stay perfectly still after firing, and even the 9 shots or so you'll use to sight it in may cause them to wobble a little, throwing off the aim.

Fepower's suggestions might work. I'm not saying they won't. I'm just not convinced of it based off the no-drill mounts I've seen. Never had a 1903 to play with though.

As for fitting the bullet in the barrel, no, it won't quite fit. It should be pretty close though. The rifling inside the barrel is smaller than the bullet itself. That makes the rifling "bite" into the bullet and force it to spin as it goes down the tube. If the rifle will properly chamber it, it's 30-06. I don't know of any other calibers that will properly feed and chamber into a 30-06 rifle.

    Good luck.

  2. Is your model 1903 converted to a sporter, or still at mil-spec? Is it considered a low numbered 03 or a high numbered 03.  The low numbered model 1903 from both Springfield and Rock Island Armory's had the wrong heat treatment done to the receiver, and probably should not be fired.  If the gun is still in mil-spec, my self, I would leave it alone, too much history in it.  Besides those ladder sights are good.

  3. Here are a couple of options:
