  1. Sales on M96 Swedish Mausers range from about $200 for a complete, unaltered rifle in poor-fair condition to about $500 for an excellent example. Some rare models will be more.

An altered rifle, one that has been removed from it's original stocks or had the barrel or stocks butchered by a non-professional will be much less. Very few well-done professional sporterized rifles will demand higher prices, in line with a fine hunting rifle.

It's not just a good rifle, it was great rifle. The Swedish crown spared no expense in arming their men with the finest rifle of the time, contracting the Mauser Brothers to design and set up a factory in Sweden, then using excellent steel and wood and superior craftsmanship. Now, yours may have been owned by an owner that took less than proper care of it, but without a doubt it ranks as one of the best rifles of early 20th industry.

The 6.5mm Swedish round is still revered by hunters for it's power, range and capabilities.

Please, learn the facts before you make a decision to alter or change what is becoming a desirable historical relic like a Swede 96. It is of course your rifle to do with what you will, but please consider the value as not just another junk military surplus rifle.

  2. You're probably talking about a model '96' small ring

    Swedish Mauser in 6.5 x 55 military.

There were both carbine and long barreled models.

It is still a 'good rifle' if properly treated.

The cartridge is still popular today, and I'd be careful

about using modern loads in that small ring action.

Pressures should be limited to about 45K PSI.

    Modern loads might go higher.

  3. Here is an excellent site that has some good data and links.

    http://www.surplusrifle.com/mauserswedis...

  4. It's known as a 1896 Swedish Mauser and there will likely be a zillion links to find info if you search using that nomenclature. Unless it has been modified, it is 6.5x55 caliber and is one of the better old military rifles around. They are high quality and well made, the caliber is also highly desireable, and it should make an excellent shooter if in good condition. See example below, ... also the SurplusRifle site given to you earlier is a fantastic place to find info.

  5. Just as others have said here, you have a Swedish Mauser.  I own 2 of them.  These are among the finest Mausers or military surplus rifles ever made.  They are very high quality, and have tack driving accuracy.

Please do not modify this rifle.  You will likely only degrade its accuracy and trash its value.  If you do not like its looks, sell it to a collector or someone who can appreciate its real value, and then use the money to buy something you like.

Consider yourself lucky to have this rifle, and take good care of it.
