I have a 1960 something mercury outboard motor and there is no water coming out of the back when running?

when the motor is running there is not water coming out of the back. Will the motor overheat?

  1. I had a 1961 merc 300.  There was always water coming out the back when running - not a stream like the newer motors - it was more of a spray.

    I would suggest the impeller needs to be replaced.


  2. Yup. Get to a marine mechanic.

  3. The main portion of the cooling water is sent down the lower housing with the exhaust and exits below the water line.  If your engine has an water indicator aperture, and not all older engines did, it may be plugged up.

    Replacing the water pump impeller is a cheap easy insurance that would be the first thing I would do.
