I have just bought this bike and it has pretty good compression (just replaced head gasket) and the carb is as clean as it was when it came off the assembly line in 1974 and i just cant figure out the problem any help would be awesome. (You think its time for a rebuild?)

  1. Does it just look clean? I don't know your level of mechanical ability, and I don't want to insult you, but it sounds like a dirty low speed circut, a vaccume leak, or a torn accelerator pump (assuming yours has one). I would start with a basic carb rebuild and a new intake rubbers. It could be any number of things though. You could also have ignition issues like binding advance weights (again, assuming yours has them).

  2. The head gasket would be the last thing to wear out that would cause low compression, more likely is the rings and piston need replaced.

Anyway, a bike that old could have leaky seals, corroded connections, tired points, heck its a long list.
