I have a 1990 Buick Century that won't start after belt broke

The belt broke on the Buick and I changed it out. The car won't start now although I don't see any evidence of where the belt might have knocked some wiring loose. Have you heard of any procedure that has to be done such as resetting the computer after the belt broke?

  1. i do not know if you mean that it will not turn over or if it does assuming that it does check that you have enough power on the battery if it is ok, check if you getting fuel by the depressing the valve on the fuel rail it looks like the one on a tire turn the key on and have someone do it. Next check for spark remove a spark plug wire stick a screwdriver get it close to the engine(about 1/8) and have someone turn over the engine you should be able to see and hear the spark jumping the engine. This should help you find the problem, a broken belt usually means that a bearing seized or broke. Now if the engine does not turn over then the engine is seized which i hope is not the case. GOOD LUCK 2 U

  2. Did you check the crank sensor? It's down by the balancer (crankshaft pulley), and is the #1 reason for a no start under the condition you described. If it cranks over but will not start, check for spark at a spark plug, if you have no spark, then likely you have caused damage to the crankshaft sensor.

The crank sensor reads pulses produced by a tone wheel attached to the balancer pulley and needs to be properly positioned to give the PCM piston position for fuel and spark management. If the engine will not crank over at all, then a starting or charging system test needs to be completed to find the issue

  3. charge the battery,
