I think it takes straight gas but connot find the oil reservor. I can get it started when i put a little gas in the carb. But it dies after about 30sec. Gas is going through the gas line. I can see it through the fuel filter. I know the carb probably needs to be adjusted. But i dont want to run it without knowing if it takes mixed gas or not. I checked several websites but i cannot find and motor specs. the model number is j650a 71 .

  1. Here's a good question have you check all you fuel line's on hook up correctly. Is the metal arrow to your float bowl between the fuel tank and motor facing the correct way! Is the old gasket to the carb, sucking air! Does your motor have water running to the engine while it's running for that 30 sec, or longer.

Let's say your testing it in the lake, with the hood cover on. It there smoke in the under the cabin. Reason is, there could be something exhaust leaking the choking off you carb. Could be a bad gasket to exhaust, or the water box's is rusted out or bad connection to a lose hose clamp. Is your choke valve closing proper, Is your on/off fuel valve clear in the line's. That's just some issue's you can look into. And about the mixing gas. Whatever you do, don't pour anything down that s***w of tap where your flywheel is. You do Not pour anything into that hole.  Other question do you use TWC-2 cycle oil to mix with your gas. Goto a dealership ang buy a mxing cup and get the saleman to show you how to mix the oil and gas to the correct amount.  If your running strainght gas, your motor is going to overheat and lock up for good. I personel do-not trust the pre-mix valve's to mix the oil into the gas. Do you have a choke cable to carb or a prime valve. Plus another thing you can do. Take your carb apart. check of old dirt fuel or grime and all filter's inside. Might need to be replace. My old dying frame had a hole and sucking air in filter. Use cleaner's to clean and blow out any trash in carb.

  2. If you cannot find a oil fill valve then chances are you will need to mix oil and gas. It may have had a oiler at one point, but a lot of people (myself included) take them off and mix the oil ourselves. Just a way to insure proper lubrication.

  3. It should have an oil tank under the front hatch. Look at the very front of the engine to see if an oil pump is present. Then follow the lines to the tank. All came with an oil injection system, but many are removed and pre-mix is used. Many reccommend blocking off the oil injection. A failure in the oil pump or a related line you'll only find when the engine siezes. Running pre-mix you know there is lubrication getting to the motor.

I would bet your injection system has been removed.
