I have a 1995 quarter that has an impression about the size of a nickel on the back side?

the quarter has a small groove cut in a perfect circle all the way around the back of the coin and would like to know if this is a defect from mint or what? i have tried looking this up on other sites with no results. hope somebody can help here. thanks for all your help

  1. Sounds like someone took a drill to the coin but it may be some  kind of error.

    Besides dealers you need to take very good pictures or scans because some online dealers can tell you online or by email.


  2. the mint would have never accidentally stamped a quarter with a nickle mold, probably just smashed by a nickle or a pipe

It may be.  Sometimes a coin will become marked by mis-strikes and similar tool marks at the mint.  It is also possible that the quarter has been struck by something after it left the mint.  My advice is to take it to MORE THAN ONE coin dealer and let them give you their opinion.  I say more than one just in case the person is a dishonest dealer and tries to take advantage of your ignorance.  If they say it isn't rare or special, but offer to buy it from you anyhow, walk away.  If all else fails, you can submit it to any variety of professional coin grading companies, but you will have to pay for the service and risk finding out it isn't worth anything at all.
