Question:

I have a 1996 Volvo 850 and the speedometer shuts on and off. Any ideas as to what could be the cause?

Every other gauge works fine including the odometer.

  1. probably a problem with the speedo gear-  i think it will be in the diff on this car.   probably just worn teeth.


  2. First off the sensor is a magnetic pickup so there is no speedo gear. the most likely cause would be the ABS control module.  They go bad alot and some will stop sending the vehicle speed to the ECM and Cluster. if your ABS and TRACS lights are on thats a good indication it would be the ABS. There could be a burnt up section in the cluster. Or rarely the vehicle speed sensor. If there is any dtc's that would help in diagnostics.
