my question is that the tranny has over 250k miles on it and is just now messing up. first the torque converter went out so i replaced it with a heavy duty t.c out of a viper tranny. then my valve body messed up, so i rebuilt it and after i did that, the tranny fluid started burping out of the fill spout. so i don't know why its doing that? also its is showing the "overdrive off light" coming on and it wont shift into 5th gear. so what do i need to do?

  1. one main reason its burping fluid back out of it is the pressure is building up inside of it and that will cause that too happen,as for the transmission not shifting in to 5th gear ,it cant its only a 4 speed automatic with lock up,transmission work is better off being done by a shop, you may wind up having to take this one to a shop to get it diagnosed,it might save you some money on repairing it,good luck.

  2. This transmission has a few known problems, some of them are the shift solenoids are known to go bad. If you have a scanner tool you can check to see if there are any codes present that could help you with the shifting woes. Fluid puking from the fill tube, and thats a long tube, can mean you overfrilled the trans, or perhaps when you rebuilt the valve body, you may have put a check ball in the wrong spot, causing a backup of pressure where there wouldnt normally be any. I suppose you could have a sticky vent, but i think thats unlikely. Not impossible. If the problem is in the valve body, that could also explain the shifting trouble. If the pressure isn't where it needs to be, lots of things could act up. Try yanking that back out and checking the placement of the check balls, also I hope you did not use any sealants when reassembling that trans. They make ugliness. Bad bad bad. If you did, that c**p can and will goop up and get into places it should never ever see.

  3. It isn't shifting into 5th because it is only a 4-spd tranny.

Fluid coming out of the fill spout is caused by an overfill condition, excessive heat, or most likely by a clogged vent line (kinda like the vents on the differential of the front or rear axle). If the case cannot vent as it heats up, it will push fluid out of the filler.

The OD off light is illuminated because there is a code being thrown (if you didn't press the button to keep it from shifting into overdrive). Have the computer scanned or do the little key test (look online) and compare the code for what you get with a list found online.

Do a search for the fault codes on your truck, you have to do something like cycle the key off and on 3 times or something I'm not sure, and you can verify codes then compare results to a list. I believe that this can be done on your year truck.
