I have a 1997 nissan altima and i have to step on the gas down to accelarate and its sucking all the gas why?

  1. is it running kind of rough?  it could be that you need to adjust the gas to air ratio.  you can do so by adjusting the carburetor (if it's carburated), with the two little screws on the front.

    If it is fuel injected (or carburated), then it could be a bad fuel pump, bad fuel sending untit, maybe even the fuel filter.  

    Also it could be a bad airfilter, which would make it unable to allow a sufficient amount of air.

  3. Sounds like a bad Mass Air Flow Sensor. It is located between the air box (where the air filter is) and the intake. When they go bad acceleration cuts in half.

  4. Fuel filter, fuel pump, timing,o2 sensor. Check with code reader for faults. Check that the choke plate is wide open when at running tempature.
