My Maine Coon was a rescue that came to me declawed, he is my buddy. I also have a 10 year old special needs child. We really want to add a puppy to our family. I am considering a siberian husky pup. I have read that they are excellent with children, but will it get along with my cat or is this a recipe for disaster? I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if harm came to the cat because I didn't make the right choice for a dog breed. I have read that that will chase birds and cats for prey, is this true? Puppy is 4 months old. My cat tends to be skittish. Please help, all suggestions welcome. Thanks a bunch!!

  1. As you know everything will have it's day. They won't get along at first but slowly introducing them to each other should work. I have a bird a conure (small parrot) and he chases the cats around. So, it will work but it will take time.

  2. You will  need to teach your puppy that chasing the cat is not allowed, ever.  I have four large dogs in a house with two declawed cats.  The dogs know that the cats are off limits, period.  One thing to do though is to give the cat a safe place.  Our office is gated to restrict the dog, but allow the cats access.  They know that this is a dog free zone.

  3. Most huskies are very aggressive towards small animals including cats, but some breeders keep cats around their siberians with no problems.  So if I were considering a husky I would make sure to buy one from a breeder who had cats and socialized her puppies with them from a young age. This breeder appears to have cats: http://antiochsiberians.com/ourdogs
