What are the symtoms that you are having. The more details, the better.

Possible that the engine will not turn when trying to start. Engine will lock up if rings break and jam between piston and cylinder! If suspect, remove the battery terminals, set emergency brake, place transmission in neutral. put a socket on the crank pulley and try to turn it. no turn = locked up.

If car was run dry of oil this is bad news!

You will see white smoke come out of the exhaust system first. Then you will be low on oil everytime you check the level on the dipstick. The engine should still run for a long while as long as you don't let it run out of oil. To repair it would be quite expensive.
