Question:

I have a 2000 yz 80 and every time i hammer the throttle it feels like it skips.

i looked at the teeth on the sprocket and they are bent forward. is it because i need a new sprocket or what? what else could it be?

  1. 1st you shouldn't be hammering a throttle, it's called rolling on.

    if your sprocket looks like it needs to be replaced then it needs to be replaced, bent or missing teeth is a good indication.

    it could be your clutch slipping, but if it's skipping and then catching really hard it's probably just your chain skipping some teeth, you should do your chain with that sprocket btw.


  2. If your chain is slipping, replaced the chain and both sprockets as a set always. A worn clutch basket will cause take off chatter also.

  3. If the rear sprocket teeth are bent, look at your front sprocket.

    When I was a kid and didn't know better, the front sprocket on one of my bikes just had "nubbs".

    It did just as you described - skipped.

    The front sprocket wares 3 times faster than the rear.

    With bent teeth on any sprocket, it's way passed due for new chain & sprockets.

    Replace the chain and both sprockets as a set, at the same time.

  4. Its time to buy a new chain and both sprockets. They sell the complete set and its the way to fix your problem right.
