  1. I would check the wiring, you should have 4 wires from your car, 1 for taillights, 1 for left turn and one for right turn, both turns also act as brake lights, and 1 for the ground wire.

  2. you need a wiring hitch adapter that has a 3 pronged female end, so it plugs into your van, and a 4 pronged male end, so you can plug your trailor up to it.

  3. Easy answer,

Walmart sells adapters for just about any trailer application, most of their stock is less than 20.00

  4. 3 prong wiring hitch or 3 wire system?

3 wire system is where the brake lights use a different wire than that of the turn lights (cars that have amber lights usually have this system)

2 wire system is where the brake lights use the same wire as the turn signals (most small trailers are this way)

if your car has a three wire system you will have to buy a converter for a two wire  system   try local parts store if not etrailer has them at  http://www.etrailer.com/pc-VWH~118438.ht...

if you have a 3 prong hitch, you are probably missing the ground wire, you can use a voltmeter or test light to check the wires

    green--right turn/brake

    yellow --left turn/brake

    white --ground

    brown --tail lights
