  1. If the light comes on for 4 seconds and goes off, it's okay, if it comes on for 8 seconds, then there is an old Diagnostic Trouble Code, if it comes on and stays on then you've got a current Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

You need to retrieve the code to find out what is wrong with the bike.  Normally, a dealership will connect their Digital Technician (HD proprietary software) to identify and remove any trouble codes, plus identify which parts need to be tested or replaced.

You can check to see if the TSSM is bad by turning the ignition switch to off and disconnect the TSSM connector (#30 on your wiring diagram) and turn ignition switch on.  If the security light does not come on, then the TSSM must be replaced.  If the security lamp does come on, then you've got to check for voltage on terminal 4 of connector 30.  If voltage is present, then repair the short to battery on wire BN/V between connectors 30a and 39b.  If no voltage is present, then you need to replace the speedometer.

For a quick check of the speedo, perform a "wow" test by pressing and holding the odometer reset switch while you turn the ignition switch on.  Release reset switch.  All lights will illuminate, needle will sweep full range.  If everything lights up, even features your bike doesn't have (like cruise), then your speedo is okay.  Turn ignition off to exit diagnostic mode.

If you see a DTC code in the area where the mileage usually is, send me an email and I'll look it up in the DTC tables.
