Question:

I have a 2007 Lexus is250 and I want to know if the car's "computer" stores a history of trouble codes?

The car has had considerable trouble and has stopped completely on the freeway twice. The first time I took it in and the dealership said that they couldn't find anything wrong with it. So when it shut down on the freeway this initial time, the check engine light came on and so did the VSC light. The next morning when it was towed to the dealership it started up fine, no trouble/warning lights at all. The second time-same exact thing-towed from Arizona to Albuquerque-this time-two months later they said there was sugar in my tank. Now Lexus Roadside doesn't want to pay for my rental reimbursement because they said the "codes could not be duplicated". So I want to know if the car itself stores these codes and a history of when there has been a trouble light initiated. They are making it sound like I have nothing better to do then to call tow trucks and sit on the shoulder of freeways-absolutely rediculous!!!! WTF!!!

Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

Oh and BTW-Lexus sucks!!!!!!

  1. i guess computer system needs a check up

  2. Yea the computer should store engine codes. Sometimes the light can come on without a code popping up. But if the last dealership did find a code but erased it then well your screwed.

  3. I'm not sure if it's 95 or 96, but any car newer than that has the new OBDII standard for reading error codes and this is stored until it's erased by someone with a reader.  So, for example if you have an error code for P0110 and don't do anything about it, then get one for P0220 and so forth... once the mechanic puts the reader to it, it will pick up all the errors that still exist or are in "memory."  Once the mechanic is done, he will typically reset the CEL (check engine light) warning.
