It was leaning a bit last year and is worse this year. Can I get it to straighten up? Or will I need to take this beautiful tree down to protect my home.

  1. You could try to cable it but you need to find out why all at once its startiing to lean ?? soft ground where a water leak is maybe.  Also you may remove some of the limbs on the one side  might help but more than likely you have to remove it to protect your house

  2. You need to find a competent arborist to take a look at the tree.  There could be a number of issues causing the lean, some of which are tree issues and some of which are soil issues.  From a distance, however, I have to say that this doesn't sound good.

I'd suggest a consulting (independent) arborist rather than a "tree company" -- the crews of tree trucks are often under quite a bit of pressure to produce $X revenue a day.

How to find a consulting arborist:

    http://www.asca-consultants.org/ (or look for issa)

Your city forester may also be able to give you an opinion.

  3. Put fence wire through a piece of rubber hose and wrap it around the trunk at least 8 feet up the trunk so that the hose piece is on the house side.  Put a toggle on the other end and add another piece of wire on to the toggle.  Pull the tree back as far as possible and fix the wire to a stake or an iron fence post.  Many times the prevailing winds cause this problem.  If it begins to do this again, twist the toggle to add tension.  If this is more than you can handle, you have two options.  Cut it down, or call in a tree service.

  4. You could try to stake and cable it away from the house.
